Hockey Canada said Wednesday, March 10, 2010,  that Crosby's missing equipment was misplaced rather than stolen after the frenzy following Crosby's overtime goal against the United States in the gold-medal game on Feb. 28.

The stick and glove Sidney Crosby used to give Canada its Olympic gold medal are back where they belong. Crosby's missing gear was on its way to the Pittsburgh Penguins star on Wednesday. Hockey Canada says the gear was misplaced rather than stolen, with both items ending up in the wrong place in the process of packing and shipping equipment after the Olympic final.

With the arithmetic clearly in her favor, Lindsey Vonn is closing in on a third straight overall World Cup title after finishing second to Maria Riesch on Wednesday in the season's final downhill. Three races remain and Vonn holds a commanding 225-point lead over Riesch, her good friend and rival.

An Olympic mystery was solved on Wednesday when officials said they had located the stick Sidney Crosby used to win the men's hockey gold medal for Canada at the Vancouver Games.

The U.S. Olympic team will prepare and train for the 2012 London Games at a university complex near the athletes' village. The University of East London announced Wednesday that about 600 U.S. athletes and 500 support staff will use its campuses, gyms and sports facilities, including a new $26.8 million indoor sports center that is expected to open next year.

Former Olympic ski jump champion Toni Innauer has left the Austrian ski federation after 17 years as sport director for ski jumping and Nordic combined. The 51-year-old Innauer, who won gold at the 1980 Lake Placed Games and silver four years earlier in Innsbruck, said Wednesday that he got "several offers" but that he won't join a foreign ski federation for at least the next year.

British athletes have been given a goal of winning at least 10 medals at the European Championships to keep the country on track for fourth place at the London 2012 Olympics. Funding body UK Sport wants Britain to finish fourth in the medal table for a second straight Summer Games and says athletes could win as many as 15 at the July 26-Aug.

Carlo Janka of Switzerland won the final downhill of the season Wednesday to take the overall World Cup lead with three races remaining. The Olympic giant slalom champion edged Mario Scheiber of Austria, keeping the once-powerful Austrian team from winning a downhill race this season, the first time it was shut out since 1991-92.

Johnny Weir won't compete at the World Figure Skating Championships later this month, but his career isn't done. "While I understand the importance of competition, I feel that a short break at this time would be personally beneficial to me," said Weir, who was sixth at the Vancouver Olympics.

Her body aching but her outlook strong, Lindsey Vonn enters the final downhill of the season with a chance to win the overall World Cup title for the third straight season. After winning six of seven World Cup downhills and the Olympic gold medal, Vonn is the overwhelming favorite in Wednesday's race, the first event of the World Cup finals.
